How I'm getting September Strong

Just throwing out the idea of September Strong doesn't make me a better, stronger version of me!  Yes I want to become a better version of the already wonderful me, that's my goal, but a goal without a plan is just a wish.  There has to be a plan of action.  You should have already seen the inspiration schedule I have laid out so that all of you can participate along with me.  If not, you can find it here.  The daily tasks will help me focus on each area individually--faith, family, fitness and food and get me into the habit of living with intention every day.

My specific personal STRONG goals for September are:

* Try 5 new healthy foods.
* Attend church and Sunday school weekly.
* Learn, understand, and memorize the monthly Word Warrior bible verse.
* Participate in "turn off" Tuesdays.
* Five days of fitness each week.
* Complete 5k mud run.
* Finish "The Best Yes" by Lysa Terkeurst
* Complete a 28-day budget "diet."

September Strong

Well it happened.  I turned another year older over the weekend.  No alarms sounded.  No confetti flew.  There weren't even any candles to blow out.  Instead there was a lot of time to think and reflect.  And, well, I realized in that moment of turning 39 I still haven't decided what I want to be when I grow up!

Sure, it may seem too late to get it all figured out and for a moment I, too, thought it might be a lost cause.  But it was in that moment of hosting a pity party for myself I decided that this is exactly where I am supposed to be. I wear many hats--daughter, sister, mom, wife, cook, maid, coach, friend, ATM, chauffeur and so many more.  And at the end of the day those hats are all a part of the fact that  "I am wonderfully and fearfully made." (Psalm 139:14)  This life is a gift and it isn't about WHAT I am going to do, it's about WHO I am going to be!  I want to be a BETTER version of an already wonderful ME!!

So...how do I go about being better.....

I start by committing to a month of doing better, being better, creating a STRONGER me!!  That's where September Strong comes into play.  I am going to live with intention in the areas of faith, family, fitness and food.  Each day I will focus on one of these areas to the best of my ability so that I might create a better, stronger ME!

Turn off the phone, computer, Ipod, TV and spend quality time together, in the moment with the family.

A day of rest and relaxation.

Prep and pray.

Mango Berry Salsa




I spent time meal prepping on Sunday and the beautiful colors of the mango and strawberries spoke to me. Together I just knew they would make the perfect topping for our salmon dinner this week.  I was right!  Amazing!  It also turned out to be delicious on top of mixed greens and on our turkey tacos.  Give it a try!

Mango Berry Salsa

1 mango, diced
5 large strawberries, diced
1 jalapeno, (seeded optional) chopped fine
1/4 red onion, chopped fine
2 T cilantro, chopped

Combine all ingredients in a bowl.  Chill.  Store in refrigerator in an airtight container.

It feels like a comfort food kind of night....

For some reason all week I have been craving hamburger gravy over mashed potatoes.  What?!  It's one of those meat and potatoes kind of meals; one of those traditional comfort food dishes that takes me back to my high school cafeteria and mom's home cookin'.  So since it's Friday night, I mean if for no other reason than that, I am whipping up meat and potatoes.  BUT tonight we will feast on Tangy Turkey Meatballs and Sweet Potato Mash.  Oh, yeah, and sweet corn right off the cob!!

Tangy Turkey Meatballs
3 lbs ground turkey (ground beef works too) 
1/2 small white onion, minced
1/2 cup rolled oats
3/4 cup almond milk
1 pkg dry Ranch dressing 
1/2 tsp black pepper

Place ground turkey in large mixing bowl.  Add onion.  Process oats until fine and sprinkle over meat.  Whisk ranch dressing and black pepper in milk.  Combine all ingredients until mixed well (avoid over-mixing).  Form into 1 inch meatballs.  (I use a Tablespoon measuring spoon)  Place on baking sheet.  
Bake 350 degrees for 45 minutes (or until cooked through).  Enjoy.

Today is NEW

I really should workout.  Just one more email to check and then I'm pushing play.  I will finish folding this laundry; then I'm getting that run in.  Ugh, just five more minutes of sleep.   Do these sound familiar?  We've all been there.  Even me.

In fact, this last week was exactly that--a week full of excuses and no fitness accomplishments.  I felt as though everything was caving in around me and I couldn't dig myself out with even the best brand of shovels. Enough is enough.

It's time to pick yourself up from the bottom of that endless pile of dirty laundry, step away from the middle of another sink full of greasy dishes, and forget about that last bite of that Snickers bar!  Refocus, recommit and BREATHE!!   

Today is a new day.  His mercies are new.  We get to start fresh every morning with new goals, new perspective.  AMAZING!
